Why I’m a big fan of the house dress

I’m going to go out on a style limb here. And potentially a 1950s’ style limb at that.

See, my blogging friend Pen, who writes over at the very funny sshh mummy’s on the phone brought up the subject of house dresses last week. And more specifically, her love of them.

She tweeted me to pre-alert me about her post and to beg that I still keep her as a friend despite her “frumpy” house dress fashion confession.

But see, here’s where I surprised her.

I’m a big fan of the house dress. Huge fan. So huge, I may just come over all Betty Draper like (from TV series Mad Men, pictured above) and stand in the kitchen looking vacantly disinterested …

Just as I am very open about my love of tracky pants and bed socks for wearing while mooching around the house in winter; the house dress is my summer saviour.

In my neck of the woods, it gets hot – hot, damn sticky hot – in summer. And we don’t have airconditioning. So unless that sea breeze is a blowing I rely on my overhead fan and my ability to wear not very much at all to keep me from slowly steaming from the inside.  A bit like a giant Chinese pork bun, only nowhere near as yummy.

I also work from home and would like to feel some level of comfort as I do so.

That’s where the house dress comes in. I have at least six on high rotation at last count.

This is why I love them:

1. They are each one garment in themselves. Which means, yes, apart from a bra and a pair of undies, I don’t have to think about what else I need to put on.

2. They are made from mostly natural, breathable fibres … everything from cotton through to modal and viscose.

3. Unlike Mad Man Betty’s structured ’50s frocks, mine are all of the loose fitting variety. To keep the non-existant air flowing, of course.

4. Most are “wash and wear” too because let’s face it, it really seems a waste to iron a dress that only your kids and the neighbour’s cat are likely to see.

5. With a couple of key accessories and a pair of wedges or fun flats, I can turn a house dress into a cafe frock quicker than you can say, want to meet me for a flat white.

Here are four house dresses you might like to try on for style:

1. MIX Apparel at Coles Duchess dress $19 | 2. Boom Shankar Sally dress $69 | 3. Boom Shankar Topsy dress $59 | 4. MIX Apparel at Coles Racer Back striped maxi $29

Do you wear house dresses in summer? Found a cute one lately that you’d like to share with us? Do you mind getting “caught” in your house dress? Come on over at chat with us on the Justb Facebook wall … would love to hear your thoughts.

I have my own version : the Mexican embroidered dress! They are super cute and colourful and if it’s a bit chilly you can pull on tights and boots to ward off those Melbourne chills! LOVE the house dress! YES!!!

ooh … the Melbourne version just had to be even more stylish. I knew it!

aaah…just finished watching an episode of The Brady Bunch (because I can) and Carol Brady can rock a housedress too. Am loving the navy and white number! But still love my airy ode to Kermit the Frog! xxx

There’s a lot to be said for Kermit’s pockets too!

I bought a housedress from Peter Alexander a few years back. Even has pockets. They don’t make them anymore but any of their nighties pass as dresses. Super cute.

Maybe we could start a campaign for him to bring them back!?

I love a good house dress. The main feature when I buy one is that there be no tight, squeezing parts. Comfort is all. And as Pip says, tights and a cardi make the house dress into an all seasons garment.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au Nikki Parkinson

Exactly – no squeezey bits allowed!

  • Valentina Borbone

I’ve just started reading your blog because I need a fashion makeover and my colleague Jacki James rates you highly! I LOVE a housedress and your suggestions have made it much easier for me to feel stylish at home. I’m a full time working mum and I feel somewhat glamorous at work but not so at home. Thank you for giving me some easy options to buy on the fly!

Oh, thanks Valentina for coming over … a lot of my clients are in similar positions to you – corporatey during the week but needing a completely different wardrobe for the weekend.

Excellent topic Nikki – there ought to be more house dresses! Target, Big W, etc should have an entire section dedicated to housedresses.. you know, like women’s wear, maternity, house dresses! But here’s a question… how many women tuck house dresses into their knickers?! I find, in a frenzied bout of cleaning, I’ll have subconsciously tucked up my dress. I’ve seen my mum do this too… anyone else or am I (and my mum!) freaks?!

Oh Peta-Jo, yes, guilty of the undie tuck when it gets too hot … although my husband does most of the cleaning around here!

I love a House Dress. In Qld they are a must in summer. Too hot for trackies and even shorts at times, yet it’s not practical to be nude as there are windows (neighbours to consider) and quite often delivery men and unannounced visitors. A house dress covers all the bases and you can still go undie-less for comfort if the mood or temperature calls for it. I have quite the collection and I swear by them. I also find a sarong is a good substitute except sometimes they fall off at inappropriate times!

Those delivery men … I often get caught out still in my pjs! oops.

  • Robyn (@slightly_deep)

I totally agree! And I love the stripes :)

      A bargain too!
