Those who know me, know I’m a huge fan of anything in the beauty department that doesn’t take a lot of effort to get a fabulous result.

Which is probably why I’ve been obsessed a fan of mineral foundation for almost six years. Not coincidentally that time was also around the time I went back to work as a fashion and beauty editor after the birth of my youngest child.

I was DESPERATE for any products that made me look halfway like the stylish vision I was trying to uphold. Let’s just say I latched on to mineral makeup and have never let go.

Why minerals?

1. Nothing achieves a flawless makeup finish as fast as minerals can. And by flawless I don’t mean a caked-on makeup look. I mean glowy and natural. This happens because the minerals act like minuscule mirrors, all working together to reflect light make you look your most fab.

2. If you seek out the the real deal, choosing mineral foundation that is filler-free, then your skin will breathe beautifully all day long. You can even use it after facial treatments, surgery or over acne. AND you can even leave it on at night, if you know … are too lazy forget. Your skin won’t even get cranky at you.

3. A little goes a long way. With specific brushes you swirl on the product, tap off the excess and then buff into the skin.

Check out this video. I show you how to apply mineral makeup for a quick, get-me-out-the-door-now look.

My top mineral foundation brands:  Jane Iredale;  Bare Minerals (featured in the video); Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics; Priori and Ere Perez.

Are you a fan of mineral foundation? Do you have a favourite brand that just doesn’t let you down? And if you’d like me to tackle another makeup 101 “how-to”, let me know what you’d like to know.

Great post Nikki! I wear make up everyday so I like looking for products that are “good for skin.” I love mineral foundation and alternate between the powder and liquid ones from Innika which is also certified organic. I tested a sample pack of Bare Minerals but got a colour that was way too dark which was disappointing as I was ready to love it! I’ve also used the nude lne availavle at Priceline but then was told that they use a filler…

Oh, so that’s why your skin looks so gorgeous?!

I love mineral foundation more than life (ok well maybe not *that* much) – quick, easy to apply, makes you look like you’re not actually wearing foundation. Absolutely perfect for a busy working mum who hates having to wear makeup!!

Here, here … we want to look “done” but not made up. And in a hurry!

I had trouble finding a mineral makeup that I liked so am having my own range manufactured right now, with release early 2012.

My bestie swears by “natural glow” but she says it’s also very hard to find. Not many places stock it.
I’ve been looking at the Nude range. It seems like a good one. Have you used it yet? Would love your thoughts?

I haven’t tried as yet but after seeing all the comments about it on Facebook, it’s next on my list!

Excellent timing. I have been wanting to try mineral makeup for some time but haven’t yet dared as I’ve been waiting for a recommendation on which brands. My makeup melts off in the summer humidity. Thanks Nikki.

The Bare Minerals pack is excellent value – and you can get colour matched at the Kit Cosmetics counter too.
