Facebook: Wow. Facebook is amazing. When Roland Van Gogh’s dad found a camera on a train (which was packed full of photos of someone’s European trip), Roland uploaded one of the photos to Facebook asking people to share it and help him track down the camera’s owner.  Share it they did. Over 48 000 times! It looks like they’ve located the owner (I just checked!) He’s a Canadian tourist who will soon be reunited with his photos (and camera!) Win! More here.

Brazilians: No. Not what you think. Rather, it’s Brazilian jails I’m talking about. A new program aims to cut jail terms for Brazilian prisoners by deducting 4 days for every book they read.  The aim is to educate and entertain, with a maximum of 48 days reduction being applied to sentences.  Tee-hee. Sentences. Books. LOL. More here.

Cyclists: Bike riders are to be given priority at four major intersections in Melbourne’s  inner city Fitzroy as part of a trial by the Victorian government.  There have been 65 accidents involving cyclists and cars on Brunswick Street over the last 5 years, so this trial aims to STOP this.  As someone who drives on Brunswick Street very often, I am looking forward to seeing how this goes. It’s very, very difficult to turn OFF Brunswick St into parking spots or side streets as it is, because  there are so very many cyclists shooting down the bike lane.  I am not sure whether I will ever be able to park my car again.  I will be the one driving around in circles waiting for a break in the bikes! I wonder if this will catch on. I am happy if it keeps cyclists safer.  More here.

I agree with Kylie’s take on Madonna’s cheerleader cossie. No, just no. Sorry, Mads. It looks a tiny bit tragic. And the bearing the boob caper. Come on, it’s a bit on the “just doing it for publicity” side, isn’t it? Maybe I’m just cranky because I’m sick and have to get uo to go to work.

I think the Brazilian thing is great. Helping prisoners to become more literate might help reduce recidivism and keep them out of jail next time. I hope it works. It’s true that lower socio-economic groups and less educated people are over represented in jail. Anything that might help combat that can’t be bad.

Thanks for adding ‘Sentences. Books. LOL.’ to my life Pip. I had a nice chuckle at that.

Love the Brazilian Prison Program that encourages reading. I ran a book club in a drug free unit in a correctional facility in QLD. Reading or being read to … amazing healing powers.
