The Block: I am missing The Block, hence I have to seek out news about The Block to fill the void that’s left in my life come 7pm each weeknight. Le sigh. Today’s blocky news is about the new season of The Block which was all set to start filming in Bondi. Unfortunately, local residents are not so thrilled about having The Block on their block. They’re worried about the traffic and the noise and the neighbourhood’s tone in general. They are objecting. You can read on here, but I think it would be a bit pesky to have cameras and construction at every turn. I get that. (Sorry that I chopped Dale’s head off in the above photo!)

The Block (again): Danny Wallis, new owner of the failed company Energy Watch is in hot water. You may know that he successfully bid on The Block brothers, Mike and Andrew’s house, securing the property for $1.4 million dollars. But Energy Watch creditors were NOT happy, especially when Energy Watch owes over $8 million dollars to creditors, $890 000 of which is unpaid employee entitlements. Ex-Energy Watch staff were miffed to see Mr Wallis and his lady friends sporting their Energy Watch t-shirts on screen and splashing cash about. More here.

The Carbon Tax: Despite the Opposition’s claims that the carbon tax will push up the price of groceries and other everyday goods, The ABC’s research finds that there’s been no impact at the supermarket as yet.  They did a bit of a shop around the burbs and found that prices were unchanged and it was business as usual. Wow re Danny Wallis and The Block! He seemed quite odd at the auction of the brother’s house. Puts a new spin on chucking a sickie and getting busted by your boss in the crowd at a cricket game on the telly. How incredibly brazen. I hope the employees get their entitlements.

I am ok with the carbon tax as long as it helps cut carbon emissions.

I know, re Danny Wallis. I know! What were your thoughts on blog ethics and disclosure, Rachel (from yesterday’s post)? I would love to know! x

Well, I think it’s such a difficult issue. I think good bloggers produce some of the best, entertaining and informative writing around. And I think that bloggers should be able to make a living out of it. But as a blog reader (and not blog producer) I want to know if the post I am reading is sponsored. At the same time, “old media” get perks for their write ups on products too. So, I think across all types of media there needs to be a certain level of transparency, which might be regulated with some clearer, less “grey” legislation.

And what about lifestyle shows? Some of them present as an hour-and-a-half ad for Bunnings Warehouse. Media and selling stuff just go hand in hand. It’s the way it is. But maybe media in all it’s forms should be a bit more up front about it – why single out “Sharons”?

        • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Pip @ JustB

mmmm. I think, in Helen’s piece, her view was that the Sharons are so deeply engaged with their readers, mores than others, and that they can lead us into this new media era, with the right guidelines in place. I think that’s what she is getting at? But that is just MY interpretation!

I agree. Sponsorship is everywhere. AND I agree that transparency and legislation are the future, too! Yes!

I agree with your interpretation of Helen’s article and I did not mean to come across as critical of Helen because I think her piece is great. I am more troubled by the us vs them attitude, journalists singling out bloggers of this ‘type’. I think it is a little hypocritical of old media or others to criticise bloggers for doing what has been done forever. Bloggers are defs the future.

Blogger are the future! You are so right. And there are lots of great writers who will turn to blogs more and more, methinks. x
