Tuesday: Newsy Snacks For Busy People
Google: Five years ago, Almir (above), chief of the Amazonian Surui tribe suggested that Google partner with the Surui and map the Amazon forest, documenting the detailed knowledge the tribe has of the region and sharing their cultural history with the world. How great. And they did. This is Google’s first partnership with an indigenous group. Google Earth’s Global Outreach leader Rebecca Moore says ”We really believe that this is ground-breaking, ground-breaking for Google. The Surui people and Google worked together to bring the story of the forest to the global community. When you fly over Surui territory, you can see it’s a beautiful virgin forest, but it is surrounded by deforestation.” Read more and each a short video featuring Chief Almir here.
Fascinators: I can’t quite believe this is a news story, but apparently it is! Royal Ascot has banned its lady race-goers (and presumably the blokes too) from wearing fascinators to the races. OMG. A hat MUST be worn, and its base must measure at least 10cm across. Ladies are also urged to wear skirts which reach ‘just above or below’ the knee and pashminas are being made available at the turnstiles, presumably for any too sheer or too strappy bodices. Oh my! Read on here.
Heart Surgery: This is amazing. A team of Melbourne doctors have performed ground breaking trials on eleven elderly women who were too fragile for open heart surgery. Instead, doctors inserted the required heart valves via incisions in the groin of these patients, avoiding potentially fatal major surgery. The valves open up ‘like a flower’ when inserted, curing patients of breathlessness and saving their lives. There’s been a 100% success rate so far. Get the full story here.
