Tuesday: Newsy Snacks For Busy People
Lance Armstrong: Drug cheat Lance Armstrong has been stripped of his 7 Tour De France titles and banned from the sport for life. The International Cycling Union will support the US Anti-Doping Agency decision to erase the rider’s career post-August 1998 in what’s being described as “the biggest crisis” the sport had ever faced. Read more here.
The Baby Bonus: The Federal Government has announced plans to reduce the $5000 baby bonus for second and subsequent children to help pay for a collapse in government revenue, reduced mining tax coffers and a $1 billion blowout in asylum seeker costs. The bonus will be cut from $5000 to $3000 from July 1, 2013, saving the government $461 million. More about that here.
Asylum Seekers: A proposal to keep count of asylum seeker deaths is currently before Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Treaties. While the estimated death toll for those trying to reach Australia is officially approaching 1000, researchers at Melbourne’s Monash University say the actual fatalities could be up to three times higher. It’s not possible to confirm the real numbers, as no official record is kept by any government agency. I think that’s crazy. Of course we should be monitoring this. It’s our responsibility, surely?
