E-Grannies :  Children in India and Columbia are enjoying chats with a bunch of virtual grannies in a scheme which links volunteer elderlies with kids who live in some of these countries most under-resourced areas..  The kids and their adopted Nannas video chat via Skype, share photos, talk about their different lives and even read stories together.  How freaking great! There’s much more to read on this story here.

Bottle Deposit Scheme : Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke will consult with Australian State Governments with an aim to introducing a national bottle deposit scheme, paying consumers 10c for every bottle they deposit at central depots. The scheme runs in SA already, and in the NT too (although it’s a bit fraught there) and it may be rolled out Australia-wide.  Surely this will result in MORE recycling and less landfill? And awesome pocket money opportunities for kids? More at the ABC.

Google :  Between 2008 and 2010, one of the Google Street View cars  was  able to download data including emails and browsing history from unsecured wi-fi networks as it drove about neighbourhoods documenting the landscape.  It’s all thanks to a rogue Google engineer who wrote a program designed to collect data for the company’s later use. Apparently only 3 Google employees knew about the intrusive scheme, and Google are now making the related files public in the name of transparency. An inquiry found Google did not break the law by doing this, and Google would like to ‘put the matter behind them’ apparently. More here at the BBC. Jeepers.

I never understood why SA only reaped the benefits of the recycled bottle and can. It was SO unfair to my 9 year old brain.

Love the grannies, that is so awesome and important.

Google – that’s totally creepy and cray cray.

    LOVE the poodle USB. Want!

Where I live we have a great recycling program – we have three bins: an enormous one for recyling, into which we can put a large range of things; another enormous one for green waste; and a tiny one for general rubbish. We have three or four recycling depots where we can take electrical goods, paint, batteries etc for them to be disposed of or recycled. All this means we have about two small kitchen bins worth of rubbish going to landfill a week – all the rest will be composted or recycled. (We also have two worm farms for kitchen scraps.) Although the bottle deposit sounds like a good idea, I think it is also a bit limiting.
