Thursday : Newsy Snacks For Busy People
Maurice Sendak : Mr Sendak died yesterday, aged 83. Sadly, he suffered a stroke. From all accounts he was quite a grumpy fellow, but boy did he write some fabulously rad books. Where The Wild Things Are, In The Night Kitchen and The Nutshell Library are among our faves. The New York Times has more about this amazing man.
Charity Clothing : Have you donated clothing to charities before? The Guardian tells us that one third of all donated clothing (worldwide) ends up in Africa, shipped in via huge bales to be sold at roadside stalls (called Bend Down Boutiques). Our cast-offs become cheap imports and are now threatening the textile industry in Africa to the point where 12 countries have banned them altogether. Despite this, bales are smuggled in and sold on to stores and flea markets, where shoppers are looking for unique or branded fashion. Argh. Confusing! Read about it here.
Facebook : I really love this! Portland photographer Tanja Alexia Hollander is trying to document her Facebook friends in real life, initiating a photography project which has seen her visit and snap pics of 200 of her 625 Facebook friends. She’s asking all kinds of questions about how friendly and connected we really are via social media, and is working her way through close friends, estranged buddies and ex-boyfriends, too. See her work in progress here.
