Thursday: Newsy Snacks For Busy People
Facebook Hate Pages: A leading cyber-safety expert has challenged police to prosecute the creators of hate pages after the recent closure of the ‘(Controversial Humour)’ page which mocked the death of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher. I had heard about that page and looked at it last week, reporting the page and two people who seemed to be behind it and were prolifically trolling anyone who voiced their distress over the page’s content. 27 year Victoria Police veteran says ”We can be up in arms when this sort of thing happens — and it will happen again — but what must happen is that the people posting this stuff are tracked down and charged,” she said. “There have been many cases in the UK where these people have been hunted down and charged and jailed. We need to do that in Australia.” I agree. Do you agree? Read on here.
McDonalds: Victorian locals in the suburb of Tecoma have rallied for the second time this week, protesting against a proposed McDonalds 24 hour restaurant, and staging a sit-in on the site. Local lady Prue Holloway said: “We took a petition to VCAT with over 2000 signatures and 1600 letters of protest, VCAT said they didn’t care about our objections.” Police Sargeant Mick Hall told the sit-in: ”If you don’t come off the land eventually then the police will be required to remove you, forcibly if necessary.” I hope this ends peacefully. Multivitamins: Wow. Whodathunkit? New research has shown that taking a multivitamin each day can lower your risk of cancer by 8%. Researchers say it’s likely that the combination of essential vitamins and minerals in multivitamins mimicked healthier dietary patterns – which had been previously linked to a reduced cancer risk. Senior lecturer from Deakin University’s school of medicine Dr Paul Lewandowski said that the study was significant because it showed multivitamins could be of benefit to many people. But he warned that people should not take vitamins in the expectation that they would prevent cancer, it’s just an added bonus. A healthy lifestyle and regular check-ups are the way to go. More here.
