Doctors For Family: A group of Australian doctors have signed a submission to the Senate inquiry into marriage equality, opposing same-sex marriage and stating that children do better in heterosexual families.  The group’s convener, Lachlan Dunjey states “It’s well proven that children who grow up with a mother and a father in a biological mother-and-father family do better than children who don’t have the opportunity to grow up in that kind of family,”. Green’s Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says ”A child being brought up in a loving home is far more important – and that quality of parenting is far more important – than any of the criticisms that have been waged by this group of individuals,” she said. What do you say? More here.

I’d say with regards to the Aussie Doctors, that the vast majority of the world’s children who are in care and/or have been abused and neglected by their parents are from traditional heterosexual families. So the senator is quite right. It’s the quality of parenting that is the key to success in ANY family no matter the gender or sexuality of the parent (or the child for that matter).

No problem. I read your facebook page All. The. Time! I just never got round to commenting on any of your posts yet. And this just happens to be a major subject in the UK just now too and one I feel very strongly about. I work in the wedding industry and have been married for 10 years next month. I can’t imagine anyone being denied the right to the happy life I have with my husband and son.

I could not agree more with Senator Hansen-Young. Being a family lawyer, I have contact with such a diverse range of parents and I see the best and worse in people daily. It is the quality of the parenting that matters. I don’t want to enter into a heterosexual vs homosexual debate but some of the most loving parents and child-focused parents I have come across are in homosexual relationships.
I would like to see this “proof” that kids do better with heterosexual parents.

I see a major flaw in this argument – people can have kids without getting married. Lots of people do, it happens all the time, for thousands of years. Even if I agreed with their argument (and I don’t) I don’t credit it as a valid reason against same-sex marriage.

I do acknowledge that children in same-sex parent families could feel ostracised or targeted and that could negatively effect them and their development. It is my view that this is due to the attitudes of some sections of the community and not the mere fact that their parents are of the same sex. That is not a reason against same-sex marriage either. If the children are given tools by their parents and are socialised in a positive and loving way, they should have the ability to rise above any negative views of ignorant people.
