Chimpanzees: Did you see this video? It’s a chimp showing a man how to free him from his chimp enclosure. The chimp really wants to get out.  What do you think about zoos?  I know that their captive breeding and research programs are so important.  But this video makes me feel very torn.

Same Sex Marriage: Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings has stated that she will legislate for same-sex marriage before the end of the year, but it’s sounding a little more complicated than it seems.  It seems that local members may vote otherwise and any legislation passed may be challenged in the High Court.  Still. It’s such a huge shift away from Tasmania’s conservative past.  More here.

The Olympics: Australian long-jumper Mitchell Watt has spoken out against the negative media coverage of Australia’s Olympic achievements.  After winning the Silver Medal for Long Jump, Watt had this to say to the media:  ”I was coping questions in the mixed zone last night. The first question I got was ‘Aww, a disappointing result’.”  The team is happy, the coach is happy. I got thousands of messages [from] back home that they are happy.  The only people who are not happy are you guys. So you need to wake up.” I think this is such a valid point. The Australian coverage of The Olympics has been very limited and very negative.  It really is time for a wake up call. More here.

I was so looking forward to the Olympics but the media’s fixation on gold is really irritating. When Gian Rooney (who as a former olympic athlete, should know better) interviewed James Magnussen after one of his events I did see a slight glimmer of something flash in his eyes – without wanting to speak for him, I think it was violent tendencies being repressed. I want to be uplifted and not want to throw the cushions at the telly. Bleurgh! It’s making me angry just thinking about it. I wish they would focus on the amazing effort and determination it takes to qualify – tell me their stories!! Gold is great – but the journey to get to compete is what is important to me.
