Monday: Newsy Snacks For Busy People
Katherine Jackson: A missing person’s report has been filed by relatives of Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine, who has not been in contact with her family for over a week. The report was filed on Saturday night, the behaviour is said to be out of character for Mrs Jackson and police are currently investigating. Apparently she was in the midst of a dispute over her finances and affairs. Read on here.
Pinterest: This piece in the New York Times suggests that the success of ‘inspiration’ sites like Pinterest hinges on creating a sense of yearning. Writer Carina Chocano explores the idea that Pinterest is less about image curation and more about the feeling we get when we see an image or thing that we want. Interesting! She writes that Pinterest is designed to make us less conscious (assuming that most of us Pin images without ever using them for anything) and that we like the wanty way these images make us feel (and sharing these images), rather than the images themselves. Hm. Read on! Do you think this is true?!
Children & The News: Good ran this great piece over the weekend in response to the tragic Aurora shootings, discussing the best ways to talk to children about traumatic events (especially important when the media is saturated with reports about these kinds of things.) You can read the full piece here, but if you don’t have time to do that, the most important message (apart from open, reassuring and age appropriate discussion) was NOT to convey a sense of hopelessness or powerlessness in the face of such mindless tragedy:
“Have regular discussions about ways people can address hate. Brainstorm ways to address these concerns at home, in school and in the community. Examples include speaking out against name-calling, making friends with people who are different from you, learning about many cultural groups and exploring ways to increase inter-group understanding. Discuss specific steps to make these things happen.”
