Friday : Newsy Snacks For Busy People

Single Parents : The press is calling it tough love. I don’t know what I am calling it but the Federal Government’s apparent decision to force single parents back to work when their youngest child turns eight seems short-sighted.  I’m not sure that they’ve thought this through properly. Parenting is a difficult job made MUCH more difficult if you have to do it on your own. Couple that with trying to balance the leg work of running a household on your own and things are fraught  already. Force parents who many be having trouble coping to add a part-time job into the mix and it could be a recipe for disaster for some families. Aren’t there other areas we can skim this $700 million from? More here.

Email : I love this report. Australian workers are learning to disconnect, with increasing numbers choosing not to answer work emails after hours. I need to learn this skill! It seems that the work-life balance juggle is coming down to simple choices like this. Well. Maybe it’s not that simple, but I think it’s a great habit to adopt if you are able to. More here.

The Scream : Edvard Munch’s famous (despairing) painting ‘The Scream’ sold at auction to an unnamed telephone bidder for $119.9 million. Holy smoke.  This totally surpassed the estimates that were being thrown about yesterday morning and bodes well for people who amazingly paint other people screaming. Growth industry, people.  Get your brushes out. Put on your beret! More here.

I heard about the single parent payment cuts on the radio and frankly I am worried for those families. Its all very well saying that parents need to have jobs but have any of these people tried to get a job recently?? I have a lot of female friends (mothers in the 35 to 45 year old age group) who have been searching for work in reception, administrative, teaching, factory and courier work and its just not there! Its fine to say just go and get a job but women in this age group with no recent experience (because they’ve been at home caring for their families) are not chosen for these positions. Unless you have some other form of training in a profession and/or support for starting your own business you will end up far worse off. There needs to be work available before the government removes this support for these vulnerable families.
