Wikileaks: The whistle-blowing site has launched a new series of leaks overnight, revealing the operating manuals of Camp Delta, Guantanamo Bay. Wikileaks now plans to release over 100 classified documents which relate to detention camps in Cuba and Iraq. Meanwhile there are worries about the wellbeing of Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange: Ecuador Vice Foreign Minister Marco Albuja Martinez said: “Assange has grown noticeably thinner and we are very concerned about his health. If he falls ill we will have to choose between two alternatives – to treat Assange at the embassy or hospitalise him.” More here.
Babies: For the second year running, the number of babies being born to mothers over 40 has outstripped the number of babies being born to teenagers. Over 45s are the fasted growing group of new mums. There were 301,647 babies born in 2011 and more than 50,000 new parents over the age of 40, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It seems this trend to wait will continue to grow over the next few years, as more and more women prioritise financial security and career establishment over bringing baby home. More here.
Power Bills: Jeepers. It seems our electricity bills are set to rise again, as power companies try to deter us from using our appliances during peak times (like around dinner time) to reduce stress on the energy grid. Energy Minister Martin Ferguson said: ”You have got to learn, for example, ‘this is the real price (of electricity) at, say, 4.30 in the afternoon to 7pm. When you are cooking a meal, why would you put the washing machine or the clothes dryer on at that particular time, adding to the peak demand and forcing up prices?” When we all use our power at the same times, it increases the need for more electricity infrastructure, which forces prices upwards, apparently. So set your alarm for 3am, guys and put your washing on then. Or something. More here.
