The Twelve Hour Day: News.com.au reports that the 8 hour day is a distant memory, with many employees putting in closer to 12 hours a day, and it’s all thanks to technology. The up side of this longer day is that our days are more flexible, because we’re dealing with things like emails before we even leave the house, and are building personal tasks into the middle of our day, when we might previously had to compartmentalise things a little more rigidly. Read on here. Do you work 12 hours a day?!

Illicit Drugs: Australians and New Zelanders are the biggest recreational drug users in the world, with a particular penchant for cannabis, according to the 2012 United Nations World Drug Report. Apparently cocaine use is on the increase, which suggests (apparently!) that Mexican drug cartels are making big inroads into the Australian marketplace. How very Breaking Bad. Read more here.

Olympic Poetry: How cool. As part of the London Olympics, the Poetry Parnassus has seen 100 000 poems rain down over the London Eye. It was literally raining words. Poets from 204 nations competed in this very wordy Olympic event, and you can hear how it played out here.

Re the 12-hour day – I have just made the leap (well, two days to go) from a very structured legal career to a more flexible career as a Personal Trainer. It is going to be a massive change and I think in a lot of ways I will be working harder/longer hours because I will essentially be running my own business. But the flexibility is what is exciting me and I really think that is the way of the future. I really dislike the drudgery of the daily grind and am aiming to use the flexibility of my new venture to branch out into other things too. For me, it is about balance; if your 12 hour day actually makes you more efficient and happier I think that’s great. But it your 12 hour (or longer) day keeps you changed to a desk, away from family, friends and sunlight I think it’s really unhealthy and sad. Lawyers have one of the highest depression and suicide rates of all the professions out there and I can only assume the responsibility and lack of balance are the main contributing factors. Your job is not worth your unhappiness (or life!).

On another note, how come people don’t like Lana Del Rey? I still don’t get why.
