Breakfast Bar : ‘Tis The Season

I am always locked in a struggle to eat better, feel better and BE better.  Are you like that? I am an improvement junkie.  I must, I must, I must improve my…  something or other.  You know what I mean. (I’m not talking about my bust.)  I guess it shouldn’t be a struggle to eat well, but sometimes it is, especially when you like Savoury Shapes as much as I do. And French Onion Dip.  Gosh.  Anyhoo, ignoring the aforementioned Shapes and Dip, I’m really a very healthy eater and hardly ever eat anything rubbishy.  Vegetables are my homegirl.  I’m not going to pretend to be a huge sprouts, brown rice and quinoa girl.  I’m not that extreme.  And I’m not huge. But I really DO love to eat delicious, fresh, healthy seasonal vegetables (and a bit of fruit too!)

I’m thinking that you might have the same quest to eat well too?  And what makes you feel weller than eating in season? Nothing much, really. Eating stuff that’s in Season means you are super virtuous, because you are packing more of a nutrient punch in each mouthful.  That’s because there’s less time from harvest to plate, so all the good stuff is not killed off by long fruity journeys or even longer vegie storage.

In Season TASTES better!  In Season makes your wallet feel well too, because the abundance of seasonal produce keeps the price down.

I just interviewed my boyfriend about seasonal produce and he said ‘It’s really good to eat Seasonal produce, because it’s at its peak.  You’re not forcing things to grow out of Season.  It tastes better.  Are these crumpets in season? Mmm.’  Well said, boyfriend. When I asked my son his thoughts he said ‘How GOOD is honey toast?’  Thanks fellas. It’s seasonal honey on that toast and those crumpets, so we’re still on topic. Honest.

Crumpets aside, we’re about to turn the corner into Summer, where all the best members of the Fruit and Vegetable Ensemble shine their brightest.  There are high kicks and pirouettes as the berries, mangoes, apricots, tomatoes and melons (tee-hee) show their fuzzy, fruity stuff.  How can you resist?!

    Hi Pip,
great post, we try to grow some of our own food at home so we can maximise the in season produce – picked our first zucchini on the weekend! I think it’s also important to teach our kids about where food comes from so they have an understanding of the seasonality of our food. That’s what makes cherries at christmas such a treat!
I’m going to investigate the nearest berry farm, I think we might have a day picking berries, then come home and make jam and pie and all sorts of yumminess…

Oh a zucchini! Hot diggity! I really want to go Berry Picking too! Lovely stained fingers and delicious pies…. you can’t beat it!!! xx

I LOVE summer fruits: especially watermelon, grapes and stone fruits.
And nice salads – just had one for lunch with roast veggies from last night including beetroot: my new fave, avocados and cous cous. Far too hot to cook anything intensive today!
And I do too like my savoury bikkies & dip and naughty sweets & treats like the new double stuff oreos…
And with bananas back to being affordable I’ve been enjoying smoothies again.

I think we are striking a nice balance, Rachel! A bit of couscous and a bit of dip! Nice! I love salads. I am a salad-a-holic! And don’t we all feel RICH eating bananas?!!! Thanks for saying hello today! xxx
