One of my lovely mother’s group mates used to say this to her kids when we’d hear the ice cream truck playing it’s plinky plunky tune. I confess it made me laugh to the point where my stomach hurt. The wide-eyed looks from all the children was absolutely priceless. Honestly, ice cream is just about the best treat in the world isn’t it? Imagine being deprived the treat on the basis of an alleged lack of personal hygiene.

My own mother didn’t have the same phobia about Mr Whippy’s hygiene habits and we regularly chased the ice cream truck up and down our street. Much as we loved the soft serve dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, the treat of all treats was going to Norgen Vaaz for “New York Choc Chip” ice cream. We were only ever allowed a single scoop though. Norgen Vaaz was pretty exy back in the day.
