Magda Szubanski comes out for gay marriage (literally), Adele grabs a Grammy (or six) and MySpace makes a comeback (yes, really): Today’s hot topics in bite-sized pieces just right for dunking.
Magda Szubanski’s funny Valentine
Comedian and Kath and Kim star Magda Szubanski is expected to make a “personal announcement” today after becoming the latest Australian celebrity to publicly back same-sex marriage, The Australian reports.
Although no one has said it in so many words the implication is Szubanski is today expected to reveal her homosexuality, something she hinted at in her Valentine’s Day plea for marriage equality.
“We pay taxes, fight wars for this country . . . make you laugh, sing and dance for you, play netball for you, star in your movies, cook your meals,” she said in a statement. ”All Australians, including gay Australians, should have exactly the same rights, including the right to love, marry and take care of our partners.”
No doubt Szubanski’s admission – if and when it happens today – will lead news websites and TV reports all over Australia and watercoolers everywhere will start buzzing with “did you know?” chatter as people dissect her public persona for “clues” they’ve missed all these years. People do so love a good gay outing.
Here’s hoping the gossip doesn’t overshadow the real issue at hand – getting the marriage equality bill through parliament.
>> Do you support gay marriage? What do you think of Magda’s announcement? Are celebrity “outings” still newsworthy, or should we all be above that by now?
Adele to become new ruler of world, have image printed on currency etc.
Her album that captivated the world was titled 21, and that’s about how many Grammys Adele could have walked away with last night if only there had been more categories in which to nominate her. As it was, the English songstress took home six awards from six nominations including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.
She could also have won for Most Tension Created at an Awards Show ahead of her performance of Rolling in the Deep, her first since undergoing laser throat surgery in October. But the 23-year-old showed no signs of vocal damage and was rewarded with a 30 second standing ovation for what was definitely the performance of the night.
The same can’t be said for rapper Nicki Minaj, who tried to out-Gaga Lady Gaga by walking the red carpet with a Pope lookalike and then performing an “exorcism” live on stage (see video below). I think I can safely speak for everyone with a working set of ears that her performance, “The Exorcism of Roman”, was just about the worst thing anyone’s ever heard. Ever. And I LIKE Nicki Minaj.
>> Did Adele deserve her Grammys haul? Who gave the best performance of the night? Should Nicki Minaj be sentenced to never sing again?

Justin Timberlake brings sexy back to MySpace
Here’s some news that got held up on its way from 2005 – MySpace is expected to announce today the arrival of one million new users since December, News.com.au reports.
It’s a seemingly dramatic turn around for the social networking service, which fell sharply out of popularity in 2008 after the advent of Facebook and was subsequently bought by pop star Justin Timberlake in 2011.
Now Timberlake and his team have reinvented MySpace as an entertainment website where users can, in his words: “go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect”. They also plan to expand into living rooms with “MySpace TV”, an app built into Panasonic televisions that allows users to stream and share videos and music.
Maybe I’m in the wrong demographic for this sort of thing, but I can’t imagine settling down on the couch after a long day at work for an evening watching three minute web videos on my TV. Then again, I am notoriously terrible at predicting trends (I thought Friends would get cancelled, the Spice Girls would be one hit wonders and MP3s were just a fad).
>> Are you tempted to return to MySpace? Would you want to use it on your TV? Will anything ever beat Facebook? Should we all just switch off and go outside for a nice bike ride?
And that’s your news on toast for this morning – that should ensure you look up-to-date and well informed when you get stuck in the lift with the boss. You can be all like “Hey, did you hear about Magda Szubanski?” – they’ll be very impressed. Come back tomorrow for more hot topics and in the meantime, share your thoughts with me in the comments!
