Weekend workshop: how to create a simple nude eye

I’m no makeup artist. Far from it. I do like playing with makeup and I’ve picked the brains of every makeup artist who’s ever worked his or her magic on my face.

Just this week I was getting all made up for TV and the gorgeous makeup artist was a little bit shocked when I just suggested she do what she thought I needed. Apparently a lot of other people who sit in her chair are specific about what they should have put on their face.

Me, all I asked was that 10 years were shaved off. In hindsight she may have preferred me give her a colour preference.

Anyhoo, at home I’m generally a makeup cheat. It has to be simple, easy and achievable in minutes. In these conditions, I go for a nude eye.

In this video, do not be scared by words such as contouring and me describing a brush as like a windscreen wiper. And a word of warning, you will not find perfection in this vlog.  I’m no spring chicken.

Step by step

1. Apply vanilla base colour over entire eye area from lid to below the brow.

2. Apply next tone of colour just to the lid.

3. Apply darkest tone in an sideways V shape in crease and near eyelid line.

4. Use the windscreen wiper brush to blend and blur any stripes – your eyelid is not a racing car.

5. Unlike in my vlog, please add eyeliner and some mascara. I look albino like. Urggghh.

Tools

I used these two brushes – a standard eye colour brush – and the windscreen wiper one. Technically I should have used a different brush for each colour but I’m lazy not technical. I did wipe them with a tissue in between.

My goodness Nikki!  You rock!!  I have never known how to do make up properly – in fact, have never even mastered the art of eyeliner – so maybe thats a topic for another workshop?  oh, and also some tips on where to shop in NYC when I am there for a month in April??? x Kylie

Ok, eyeliner on the list – I only learned myself about 5 years ago! And re NY – I’m not going till August but I’ll do some investigative work.

  • Linda

Thanks Nikki loved the post. You have inspired me to buy some brushes. Where is the best place to buy them? I am so slap dash so I really appreciate the inspiration.

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

I go for quality brushes – in my collection I’ve got Jane Iredale (linked above), Napoleon Perdis and MAC. Both have counters in the major department stores. Napoleon also has stand alone stores.

Do you know a good green cream to combat redness in the skin?

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

As a cosmetic or as a treatment?
As a cosmetic, I like Smashbox Photo Finish Colour Correcting Foundation Primer in Adjust: http://www.kitcosmetics.com.au/products/smashbox/photofinishcolourcorrectingfoundationprimeradjust/
As a treatment, I advise you to use sensitive products and ones designed to help reduce the redness. This one from Demalogica is great: http://www.dermalogica.com/au/html/products/redness-relief-spf20-137.html?type=skin_concern&cat=sensitivity+or+redness

Thanks for the hints Nikki.  I need any I can get!  While on eyes, I bought an eyelash curler during the week and tried to use it last night – epic fail!  How the heck do you use that contraption?  I ended up getting a little bit of curl but only on the lashes in the middle of my eye and I wasn’t able to get the ones on the sides.  I kept pinching my eyelid.  Am I just a gumby or is there a real trick to it?

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

This is a good question – and one that would be good for a video – so you can see that I am a gumby too! And I mean that in the nicest possible way ;) It is tricky, it’s a practice thing. A makeup artist used one on me this week and even that is tricky – keeping your eyes open as someone brings a metal object towards it. Leave it with me – will tackle this for you.

Did you see how I had a beauty response to PurpleRainie up there? See, I know stuff! x

        • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

Just got it now! Thanks Anon.

Curl before you put on mascara. Heat the curler with your hairdryer. Place it as close to the bottom of the lash as you can, towards the outer edge of your eye. Press. The heat will mean you don’t have to press really hard and it will also create a nicer, more even curl. If you find this doesn’t work, you might have a wonky (eye?) eyelash curler… x

        Oh that’s awesome – thank-you!

        • PurpleRainie

Thanks for the replies ladies.  An instructional video would be awesome Nikki but in the meantime I’ll try out your technique Maxabella :)

Thanks Nikki.  Love that eyeshadow trio and I have just checked it out on their site.  I am thinking that I will just get one in every colour I and it is all sorted!!

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

      Makes it too easy really!

  • Lea

Nikki this is great thanks. i’d love you to cover liquid eye liners.  Have never been able to master this and now my 2 teenage daughters use it and create these ‘cats eyes’. i would like to be able to help them with that as well. thanks heaps.

      Ok can do!

  • Tbgude

You really are awesome Nik, I am stocking up on makeup for this years birthday.  I cant believe I came to see you, make up free other than 13yr olds mascara because I left my gear at home.  Your tips are really cool, Jodie was the only one I knew who could do makeup!

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

All good! And yay for your daughter’s mascara!

  • http://www.maxabellaloves.blogspot.com/ Maxabella

That’s a lot of nudity… and you have a wonky eye? Where? x

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

My right eyebrow and lid is lower than my left – why I have a fridge on that side to disguise it!

  • Cindy

    Thanks for the tutorial Nikki.
Just as a point of interest I stumbled across Zuzu’s blog – Everyday Beauty the other day and she had the most interesting segment on tightlining on Wed 22 Feb which was like a magic light bulb moment for me. This apparently is a method of eye lining for people with not a lot of lid if you get what I mean and it absolutely works like a dream. Just thought I would throw into the mix for you and your followers. Btw I used Maybelline’s gel liner expecting to get some eye irritation but didn’t – my underactive thyroid can sometimes be a pain like that.

Thanks so much! Will check out!

Great hints. I am looking at the Wet N Wild eyeshadow you used in the video.  What is the colour trio you used, is it Sweert as Candy.?

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Nikki @ Justb.

Thanks Glenda – yes it’s Sweet as Candy
