How To : How to apply eyeliner
I used to be scared of eyeliner. Never even owned any.
I was scared of looking like a panda. I was scared of looking like a makeup “try-hard”.
But then I got a lesson from a makeup artist and I’ve been a convert ever since. Admittedly, I’m not an extreme eyeliner user. No, I leave that to the experts.
(See the photo above … yep, that’s me … with eyeliner NOT applied by me. It was applied by a fabulous makeup artist and I felt really amazing all night … I finally GOT what the smokey eye pale lips thing was all about!)
Anyhoo, since getting a few little tips and a bit of tutorial from a number of experts over the years, eyeliner is very much a part of my makeup routine. I mostly use a brown or navy pencil but I also use a liquid black for a more dramatic effect. I’ve also been shown a way to use a small angled brush dipped in water to turn a dark eyeshadow into a liner.
Whatever eyeliner you choose use, the big tip I’ve always been given is to apply it using small, downward, feather like strokes that “join” together to make one line. Before I cottoned on to that little trick, I’d thought I needed to draw a straight line all in one go … hence my scaredy pants attitude.
I’m certainly no expert and there are plenty of non-experts out there who apply eyeliner way better than I do … but I did this little video in case you too have been a bit of a eyeliner avoider.
