The early 1990s were many things to me.
They were my young, free and single unlucky in love years. They were about still getting asked for id at at nightclub. They were about dancing to Bust a Move at said nightclub.
They were about getting up the next morning after said dancing and putting on a fluoro lycra leotard and doing a cardio-funk aerobics class with a scrunchie in my hair.
They were about chambray shirts, a burgeoning obsession with Country Road and a particular penchant for tan loafers.
I wore my croc-skin loafers for work and for play, with skirts and with jeans. I was preppy personified … and a walking catalogue for Country Road.
By the late ’90s I’d long said goodbye to my loafers, poo-pooing their preppy-ness. But somewhere in the deep, dark recesses of the fashion quadrant in my brain, a little candle still flickered for the loafer.
And now that little candle’s flame has been re-ignited. I have embraced the loafer again for winter 2012 and no-one is going to stop me. Not even my husband, who says my $15 leopard print pair from Big W’s Emerson label look like slippers.
I’ll be wearing mine with skinny leg jeans, leggings, my tube maxi dress and maybe a short pencil skirt and tights.

What do you think? Are you ready to loafer around this autumn-winter?
