Last week The Way She Wore featured the squeaky clean Molly Ringwald. This week we’re going a bit more pants-off, rock-chick and revisiting the radness that is Debbie Harry.
How about Debbie Harry? I mean, as a teenager I thought she was amazing, but I was also a bit frightened of her tear-away ways. I loved the way she sang, dressed, looked… but in my suburban bedroom (featuring blue flowery doona cover and curtains with clouds on them) I could not for the life of me work out what the whole punk princess, no knickers, wide-eyed, messed up thing was all about. No matter. I still liked her hair/t-shirts/sunnies/shoes.
Now that I’m grown up and have an edgier doona, I have more of a handle on the naughtiness that is Debbie Harry. I can kind of make sense of the place she was in, now that I’ve tried drinking whisky and staying up all night.
(Have you listened to/read her semi-recent Desert Island Discs interview? It’s really great.) Here’s our Debbie retrospective.
Were you a fan of Blondie? Or maybe you still are?!
