Do you give any thought to your brows? I have to admit I was previously guilty of giving my brows the cold shoulder.

For starters, I have one that is lower than the other. That would be what I endearingly term, my wonky eye. For mains, I’m a quick-out-the-door-beauty kind of girl (except on dress up occasions). And for dessert, I really never knew what I was doing.

But one of the lucky things in my job is I get to meet people who do know what they’re doing. I now get them professionally threaded* and shaped once a month and I use a brow pencil most days to add colour and definition. This is HUGE improvement on when I was tweezing the bejesus out of one of them in a stupid, unskilled attempt to right my wonkiness.

In any case, before discovering threading, I remember walking into the Benefit Boutique and Browbar in Paddington, Sydney, about two years ago and being told there and then to stop with that crazy tweezing. It was making me more wonky. Who knew?

Maybe YOU’D like to give your brows a little bit more of attention? Benefit has just released a pretty cool book, Raising Eyebrows ($25). It’s funny, sassy and serious about getting you on track with your brows.

The reason: brows more than anything frame your face. They bring everything else together so that the other features of your face can strut their stuff.

10 Brow-Raising facts (from Raising Eyebrows)

  1. In sign language eyebrow movements indicate the difference between a statement and a question. The eyebrows also help suggest skepticism, irony and doubt.
  2. The average cost of a brow-lift performed by a cosmetic surgeon is around $2500. The average cost of a brow shaping performed by a cosmetic professional is about $25.
  3. Complete eyebrow loss can occur in both men and women. It’s most commonly caused by injury, trauma, overplucking or aging.
  4. Wigs for eyebrows? Yes! Eyebrow wigs are made from human hair woven into a delicate lace base and then stuck to the skin with an adhesive.
  5. Camels have three eyebrows – one above each eye and one large tufted crest in the middle. Why? To protect the eyes from harsh sun and blowing sand.
  6. A New York salon now offers eyebrow hair extensions. Seriously. Unfortunately they only last about two weeks.
  7. Eyebrows are the slowest growing hair on the body. A shaved brow can take up to a year to grow back completely.
  8. In China, long eyebrows are universally considered a sign of good fortune.

10 celebrity brow crushes (from my brow shaper)

* Threading is ancient hair removal system that, when done correctly by a trained threader, is not painful, produces a great shape and keeps the skin around the eyes most protected. Get Threaded is the only registered trainer of the art of threading in Australia. You can read more about it here.

It’s uncanny everytime I get my brows done – after being a lazy bones about it – the next day I get comments on how “Well” and “Healthy” I am looking. I am now realising that I look “unwell” with my Ernie eyebrows ;)

I know! I’m the same … I went 6 weeks last time and wow, I so noticed the difference.

I have had a brow – and everything else – crush on Liz Taylor since I was a little girl.  Mine are a little on the thin side so I’m scared about letting anyone else touch them…

An expert can help get them growing again in the right shape (if they’re still growing?). I had completely plucked an area I shouldn’t have and they’ve been redeemed!

I’m terrible with my eyebrows. I really need to make an appointment with Benefit ASAP!!!

I had mine done last week and I always feel so much better, they really do wonders for the face.  I have a crush on Bambi Northwood Blyth’s brows…she looks amazing.

Always good to get a good brow recommendation!

I have sparse hair on my eyebrows but I try hard to work with what I have got. In my mind, eyebrows are one of the most important parts to looking ‘done’ and ‘put together’. I am looking forward to going dark with my hair again just so I can darken my eyebrows too. Rachel

I’ve only had mine tinted a couple of times and it’s really not for me. They’re already darker than my hair colour. Thankfully my lovely brow shaper Liz agrees!

Nothing beats a good brow and unfortunately mine show the signs of years of abuse and over plucking and now I have a few sparse spots and sadly they will never be a full gorgeous shape I lust for.  I’m also very slack on brow maintenance but this threading looks amazing and boy did I love Brooke Shields and those brows in the 80′s.

I remember a lady friend of our family gushing over my eyebrows when I was in my teens. She told me how lucky I was, & never to pluck them, because she plucked her’s when she was young & consequently had to draw them on. I had no idea what she was on about. Until that day, I’d never given them a second thought. They’re eyebrows… they just… look like eyebrows, don’t they? But that day changed everything & I’ve been brow-conscious ever since. I now really appreciate how lucky I am – I do have good brows! Mind you, I am still a little thrown every time I get a compliment. I mean, people get complimented on their great hair, beautiful eyes, clear skin…. but eyebrows?? Oh! Um! Thanks! :) ))
