Be Pretty

Are you into beauty? Do you want to be pretty? I am. I sort of do. If I can do the beauty/pretty in the midst of doing the OTHER great stuff I want to do then I AM IN.   I LIKE the idea of the day spa, for sure. But my idea of an awesome day spa is being on the couch, in my house, with a Breaking Bad box set on the telly and a fairly ridiculous amount of corn chips and salsa on the coffee table.

Yes.  I really do think it’s ace to do the whole lying down, cucumbers on the eyes, piped music thing. But I want to lie down amidst the kids’  biscuit crumbs on the floral rug I got at IKEA last month.  I want the piped music to be a bit of PJ Harvey or some Sarah Blasko or a bit of The Shins.  I am not sure, but do they have crumbs and PJ at Le Spa De Jour?

I am NOT saying that the conventional day spa is a bad idea. Please don’t think that.  What I am saying is that in this age of creating our own personalised experience, I am seeking the kind of day spa that can offer me some Cheezels, the alluring scent of my boyfriend cooking curry in another room in my house and the ability to wear those track pants with the rip in the inside leg.  I am thinking Le Day Spa De Chi Chi Lady might not get that. (I could be wrong!)

Tonight on JustB we are setting you up for your own spa weekend. All you need are these rad ideas, some Cheezels, a bottle of plonk and your track pants.  Godspeed to you, Mlle Beauty Buff.

Are you into homemade beauty treatments? Do you have any tips for us?!

A couple of tips as I run workshops teaching people to make their own skin care using natural ingredients for Green Renters.

If you are looking for completely vegan ingredients, candelilla wax is a good alternative to beeswax.

A surprising number of people are allergic to aloe vera which is featured in a lot of skin care recipes. Omiting it and adding some macadamia or jojoba oil can be a good option.

Your creations will have a longer life if they are prepared using sterile equipment into sterile containers. Using a clean spatula or pump nozzle instead of dipping your fingers in whilst using reduces the risk of bacteria. Bacteria causes mould and you don’t want that anywhere near your face!  You can also buy natural preservatives of course (pretty much an article in itself!) which i like to use for anything I want to keep longer than 3 months.
