Weekend workshop: how to wear a scarf

Let’s not beat about the accessories bush here: scarves are like the wunderkind of wardrobe accessories.

Even if you don’t have the origami skills of some (and I don’t), you can just sling one around your neck and instantly the most basic of outfit – think jeans and tee – is lifted to a whole new style level.

I put together this vlog last year during winter as I was getting a lot of questions about how to wear scarves … mainly because I’d been banging on about good how scarves are for that very reason. These are the four ways I’ll typically wear my scarves.

Now, I’m firmly an all-year-round scarf wearer. I’ve got a scarf storage thingy called a Hanger Dangler on the back of my door and I swap around the scarves that live there depending on the season.

I’m getting better at trying different ways in winter but in the warmer months, it’s just a drape around the neck. Too simple.

Here’s an infographic that will get you started on six more ways:

And if that’s not enough style inspiration, here are some of my favourite styled scarf looks.

In this gallery I’ve included three from the winter 2012 collection of Melbourne-based label Nancybird. I have a major girl crush on the designer Emily Wright. I get that way when I see really talented people doing amazing things in the fashion world. Emily does that and more. Her scarves are like art pieces and her amazing bags and accessories and are collectables as well. They’ve also featured on previous series of Offspring and I’m told we’ll see more this season. I always feel a little bit spesh when I’m accessorising with Nancybird.

Enjoy.

I’m quite excited about this.  I’ve been trying a few scarves lately and they really do transform my normal t-shirt and jeans.  Great tips Nikki!

It’s amazing to look in the mirror and see the difference it can make. Such an easy add-on as you walk out the door too.

Just bought a lovely light wool nancybird scarf it’s beautiful.  I find  thick wool makes me feel too bulky. I have a lot of scarves that haven’t seen the light of day and I’m determined to start wearing them.  I did see a beautiful scarf the other day but it was a sqauare shape and I couldn’t work out how I would wear it without looking grannyish.
    Thanks again Nikki :)

I do prefer a lighter knit too – and with my square silk Nancybird scarf I fold it in half as a triangle and then knot the widest points together – throw it around my neck and let the silk drape down the front.

Love the scarves, I have never really worn them before other than for keeping warm, but have recently been using them more of an accessory. Also as a bonus they work really well for anxiety! Weird I know, but I feel more secure when I have something around my neck ( perhaps my husband would prefer a noose lol) only kidding lovely husband who pays my credit card bills no questions asked. But now have a good assortment of different styles and textures and now will be trying out some new ways of tying them too. Thanks.

Maybe they’re like an anchor for you? I think it’s wonderful you’ve found something to help.

Scarfs do have the power to change an outfit. However they can get lost in your wardrobe so now I have a bamboo ladder in my bedroom and tie my scarfs on the rungs, easy to find and to keep neat and I’ve discovered some beautiful long lost ones in the process.

Thanks Nikki for these great tips.  I’m a scarf wearer from way back and change scarves daily, but never thought of changing the style in which I wear them. Thanks for these great tips.
