Did you know I’m moving house soon? It’s true! The kitchen at the new ranch is just fair. It’s a bit dated and not really my style so I’m looking for ways to give it a facelift on the cheap.

Some of the ideas we’ve rounded up are inspiring me in the fixer-upper stakes. I’m guessing I’m going to be on a first name basis with the guys at Ikea … (I can see little Ikea touches in so many of these kitchens.  Maybe you can spot them too?!)

And some of these rooms are bursting with colour.  I think I’m going to try to be a bit brave with a paintbrush too. The current grey is just not going to cut it.  I’m going to need a bit of cheer in there!

    This has got to be my ideal kitchen, so much space, and room to move around and relax with your family.

    LOVE that orange & lime job!! I haven’t tarted mine up as it’s going to be ripped down ( although I have lived with it for 7yrs, so, in retrospect, I probably could have done more .. ) .. the BEFORE is here:

    So, basically a red clock and a string of lanterns – ha!

    My previous kitchen was a knock-down too, so I went liberal with the paint pots and it was .. quaint. The best thing ( for me ) about non-perfect houses is that you can do anything without “ruining” anything, if that makes sense? Oh, and I have a chalkboard wall too.. hmm.. should have taken a pic facing the other way, I suppose.

    I had a really limited budget to renovate our kitchen and here’s my tips – Paint and new handles can make kitchen cupboards look completely different. Tiling is easier than you think! We bought plain white rectangular tiles from a tile warehouse and redid the splash backs ourselves. My husband made new timber bench tops with pine which only need varnishing every few years. The only thing I splurged on was a really good stove and rangehood.

      Excellent tips. I might make a little series about the doing up of the kitchen…that’d be a bit of fun wouldn’t it?

        Would definetely love to read a series on doing up a kitchen. Am always interested when I see the concrete benches but would be too scared.

    After perusing the photos, I’ve been inspired to do *something* (anything?) to try and improve my sorry kitchen. As someone has mentioned, the great thing about starting with something awful is you can’t make it worse! I thought I might start with an idea I’ve seen to use fabric as a temporary ‘wallpaper’ put up with starch or corn starch. Or maybe thumbtacks. I’ll probably decide on the day!

      Yes. I love this idea. I recovered my kitchen stools with fabric and they’ve been going strong for about 6 months so that’s pretty good.

    I contacted my kitchen to change the ugly blue laminate to white – happy for the most part, cheap, cleans easy and no “paint drips or errors”. It made a massive difference. I also have pink accessories – Hubby hates it but so long as I’m happy he doesn’t care :)

      Ha – I think my husband will feel the same. He’s not a fan of pink though – all my stuff is red.
