As a child, my mother would always buy my brother, my sister and I an advent calendar each. Back in the day, they were fronted by a glittery Santa scene (or Father Christmas, as we were wont to call him), and behind each tiny door was a doe eyed bunny, or adorable deer or even a sweet kitten. Just my cup of Ovaltine, aged 6.

Now, of course, advent calendars are harder to find and often conceal the kind of slippery chocolate we try our best to avoid at Easter.  Like a brown boomerang, it reappears around Christmas as we open the little windows on the Aldi or Coles or Woolies versions. Gazooks!  No longer egg-shaped, it’s been moulded into the form of a bell or a wreath or a spiky bit of holly. Gosh.

Perhaps this is a hint.  Perhaps these slippery chocolate are  heralding the fact that when we get to day 25, the shelves of Aldi or Coles or Woolies will magically fill with Easter fare, in the kind of circle of festivities that alarms more than celebrates. No!

Of course, there are much better ways to advent. Ways that do not involve being alarmed or downing the shiny kind of chocolate that can only be found hidden behind Santa’s boot. Phew.  Here’s eleven advent calendars, lovely enough to restore your faith in the Christmas countdown!

Do you like to advent, guys? Are you alarmed annually by the circle of festivities?

Love the tea calendar – perfect for my tea-drinking friends for a daily moment to stop and appreciate.
