I’ll let you in on my dorky little secret: I’m dead excited about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this weekend. I know. I’m the woman who decidedly ticked the “YES” box in the referendum for Australia to become a republic all those years ago.

But you know what? I’m feeling OK about my dorky duplicity. And I think a few other Australians might share my exact feelings.

I’m not going to delve too deeply into my admiration for Elizabeth II, as I’ll start to unravel a mess of undergraduate post-colonial theory and I’ll start questioning why I’m writing this blog post in the first place. Best just to accept that I reckon 60 years in any job is worth acknowledging and I’m a dork and move along…

It doesn’t help that since I moved back to Sydney after living in London for three years, I can’t help looking back over my shoulder at what I left behind. I really miss the place. And I can’t help but feel swept along in the frenzy for Union Jack-and-corgi-emblazoned memorabilia – especially when every second tweet, instagram or status update details the latest preparations for this weekend’s street party. What can I say? I have a strong sense of occasion and I’m a sucker for a good string of bunting.

So while I’m stuffing my cake hole with Coronation chicken sandwiches this weekend, I’ll be raising a glass to Elizabeth II.

And if you’d like to join in, here are my top 10 ways to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

Make Jubilee jelly
What’s a Jubilee party without the Queen? Or jelly, for that matter? This Queen’s head jelly mould by British artist Lydia Leith solves both problems, and you could try layering red, white (champagne) and blue jellies for a festive touch. Serve with strawberries and cream. Or if you want to really fancy, you could try making this Kir Royale Jelly recipe.
