Have you ever…?

Lately I’ve been taking stock of my life and wondering if there are activities I should be trying or places I should be visiting or people I should be learning from or chocolate treats I should be eating? Am I doing enough to embrace life; to be engaged in this world?

I’m turning 40 next year, that might explain my increased need to examine  the world and my place within it. I think most people go through a period of reflection when they’re approaching milestones in life. Do you?

I reckon life is a journey worth living, one of self discovery. Life is about meeting challenges head-on and taking risks. I’m a firm believer in not only embracing change, but driving it. Love, light, laughter and adventures, I say. I am going to take this year, prior to entering my forties, to tick a few things off my list. It’s so easy to get caught up in everyday commitments of work, house and family. Sometimes it’s fun and soul lifting to think outside the square.

So, in case you’re like me and you’ve been yearning to break out of the everyday routine, I thought I’d ask you a few questions to get you started on your way.

Have you ever painted a portrait or written a poem?

Have you ever taken a language course?

Have you ever marched for something you believe in, written a letter of complaint to your local MP or taken a stand against injustice?

Have you ever stood up for a stranger?

Have you ever done something that scares you?

Have you ever taken up knitting, crocheting, quilting or woodwork?

Have you ever cooked a black forest cake or tempura prawns or homemade yoghurt?

Have you ever eaten truffles or carpaccio or caviar?

Have you ever rock climbed or skateboarded or kite surfed?

Have you ever given up on something, only to think stuff it and then given it another go?

Have you ever sipped coffee at a French bistro in France or swam with sharks in Port Lincoln or watched the sun set over Uluru or visited the Tate Modern in London?

Have you ever written a story or journal?

Have you ever volunteered at a not-for-profit organisation or raised money for charity?

Have you sung karaoke or done a dance class?

Have you ever auditioned for a play?

Have you ever run a marathon or jumped out of a plane?

Have you ever said sorry for your actions or truly forgiven someone for a past wrong to get closure?

Have you ever let your kids stay up really late and then taken them out for pancakes?

Have you ever quit your job to chase a dream?

Have you ever studied just for fun?

Have you ever got a tattoo?

Have you ever read Tolstoy’s War and Peace?

Have you ever done a nudie run?

Have you ever watched every John Hughes’ movie back-to-back?

Have you ever put off an important task and instead just lay on the grass and watched the clouds float by?

Have you done any of those things? I’d love to hear your responses. Do you have any questions to add to the list? Have you ever…?

Have a fab day,
Bianca x

Great post! I am actually proud to say I have pushed myself to do a lot of the things you mentioned.

    Very inspirational :)

I love learning new things. Last year it was crochet & sewing. It’s been great fun. I have tattoos & still plan a few more. I started a journel this year & am contemplating a blog ( which scares me but I really really want to do it). I used to journel all the time but as I got busy with my family it stopped. Last year I signed up to manage my sons footy team even though I knew very little about it. I’m doing it again this year.

A few weeks back I got a notebook & started some list. These list are things I’d like to cook, make, do, read or watch. I thought it was a good way to remind myself to do all the things I say/think I want to do but often forget about. So far I’ve crossed 3 things off. They aren’t big,& maybe not even exciting, but it’s all about doing something new or different….

    Hi Bianca
Great post. I’m also within the vicinity of 40 and find that by writing these down puts them in your face as a visual reminder to make the most of life. How often to we get caught up in lots of lower level priorities. A couple of my newby’s include:
    - Put up the tent inside in winter and have a “camp out” with my child
    - Taking my mother to the Chelsea Flower show – I’ve just discovered gardening and to my  surprise – like it!
    - Have a girl’s night in and watch the movie Sunshine (a real tear jerker) or Gone with the Wind.
    - Be brave and try a IPL brazilian and banish the bikini line forever
    - Go to a comedy festival – it feels so great to laugh from the stomach for an hour!
