When I was little, my mum took me to a restaurant for dessert as a special treat. It was after a birthday concert (Marcia Hines? I was 7?) and it was just the two of us.  We pulled up outside the place, and I SWEAR to you it was called Dirty Dicks. Like HONESTLY.  My 7 year old self was so chuffed to be out late with my Mum, but JEEPERS. Dirty Dicks sounded totally wrong to my 7 year old self. (AND to me right now!)

My Mum ordered me crepes and we sat and chatted while we waited for them to arrive.  I remember we sat by the window and it was a rainy night.  I tried to forget about the Dirty Dicks and watch the raindrops blooping off the window frame.

I turned my attention from the bloops when the waiter rounded the corner and put a plate in front of me.  There were three crepes rolled up like cigars, swimming in a sea of yellow. Butter. The sea was butter.  I wished the sea was maple syrup or lemon juice or custard. But it was just butter. Crepes and butter. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I had never seen so much butter. Dirty Dicks and a sea of butter.  It was all a bit much, really. I forced myself to eat the crepes and every time we drove past that place after that, I thought of the sea and the dicks and felt a bit queasy.

LUCKILY, crepes are not always about buttery seas.  In fact they are so much more and through many years of aversion therapy I have learned NOT to associate overbearing crepes with Dirty Dicks.  And I have learned that crepes are actually delicious.  They do not have to be simple and sea-like.  They can be fruity or light or syrupy. They can be happily filled with peaches. They can be merrily doused in maple.  They can be spritzed with lemon juice. They can be smothered in chocolate.

The bottom line is that they can be REALLY good.  And those early crepe memories can be overcome by something WAY better.  Sorry Mum.  It’s totally not your fault!

Do you love crepes?!
