If you are anything like me, then you grew up with the dull hum of a mixer as the backdrop to your childhood.  My Mum, Dad and my Nanna were avid cooks, baking and rolling and tarting up (in a bakey way) so that we all had delicious after school snacks, desserts and lunchbox treats.  Mixing bowls were wiped clean with little fingers. Beaters and whisks were coveted and fought over.  Unsupervised iced cakes were dotted with sneaky snack marks.  Baking supplies like chocolate buds and condensed milk tubes were secreted away with crossed fingers that they would not be missed.

Was it like that for you, I wonder?  Did you grow up bakey, like me?  Perhaps you are a latent baker, seduced by the likes of Masterchef, Nigella, Sophie Dahl, Maggie Beer or Stephanie A?  Or perhaps you have, dare I say it, NEVER BAKED AT ALL!   It’s okay. We can show you how. We are good with our hands.  We are!

Whichever handy, cakey camp you are from, we are super glad you are hanging with us at Justb.  Our whole team is gob-smacked by the amazingly great sense of community we’ve got going on around here.  It is our very fave place to be.  As a sugary thank-you-slash-celebration of our buddying up, we thought you might like the chance to win something ace. So here it is!  Drum roll, if you please… (sausage roll, if you prefer!)

The prize : One super special  JustB reader will win an amazing Kitchen Aid Platinum Collection KSM156 Stand Mixer!

Will it be YOU?!  Gasp!  Would you love to win a mixer?  I think you might!  This is the top of the range model and it comes in a whole lot of rad colours : Candy Apple Red, Raspberry Ice, Sugar Pearl, Cafe Latte … even COPPER!   The lucky winner can choose the colour you love the most. Omg!  YAY!  (The mixer retails for $799AU)

To be in the running to win :  We’d love you to submit your very favourite Delicious Treat kinda recipe and tell us why you love it.

Think cake stall, dessert, afternoon tea, bake sale, that kinda thing!  The recipe needs to be your own or a family recipe.  It should be something you love to make, bake or eat.  Be sure to let us know if it’s adapted from someone else’s recipe too! We’ll choose our very favourite from all the entries and the grand prize winner will take home a brand new Kitchen Aid Platinum Collection Stand Mixer!

If you need some inspiration, check out this lovely post : 10 Ace Cakes To Bake!

We wish you all the very best of bakey luck!  Chookas! Break an egg!

thanks Just B – you rock!

    • Pip Lincolne

@margierahmann Oh I wish I COULD WIN!!!!! You are most welcome, Margie! x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au NikkiParkinson

      @margierahmann You do too!

      • margierahmann

@NikkiParkinson and @Pip Lincolne gee thanks!

  • LexyBrooks

I never baked growing up, so I taught myself with a wooden spoon and bad glass mixing bowl. I think @KarenMunton would love to enter this, as it is her lovely mother in law who taught me what a wooden spoon and mixing bowl even WERE.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au NikkiParkinson

@LexyBrooks@karenmunton I never had a mixer either. I had a rotary beater and tried my best to make cakes but they were always flat!

      • margierahmann

        @NikkiParkinson@LexyBrooks@karenmunton a rotary beater… that’s what I have…second-hand at that… maybe THAT’S why my peanut biscuits turned out flat…

  • iheartryan

Please Lord of the Kitchen, Grant me a mixer and i would go from zero to Nigella in 30 seconds.. x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au NikkiParkinson

@iheartryan LOL. I would too. I’d even wear a frilly pink apron. All day! Good luck.

  • jaynegrant

I absolutely grew up with the sound of the Kenwood droning from the kitchen. Mostly slices. Copha coated chocolate biscuit cake was the most sweetest and decadent. Fighting over the beater and the bowl. And sweetened condensed milk, made in heaven… My 3 1/2 year old loves to help me in the kitchen, but insists on a scoop at each addition! Thanks justb for the opportunity.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au NikkiParkinson

@jaynegrant Yes, I love how I get “help” too … mine has got so smart he usually just shows up for the bowl!

    • http://www.meetmeatmikes.com Pip Lincolne

Ooh you’ve taken me right back, Jayne!! Thank YOU! xx

Hi, I seem to have a problem with entering my recipe, it seems to run out of space, my recipe isn’t that long though…Maybe it’s an iPad problem? Can I email my entry instead? Thanks

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au NikkiParkinson

@NatalieCarusoPetrizza Hi Natalie, it’s possibly the iPad … email me your entry (including all the details asked for on the form above) to nikki@stylingyou.com.au and I’ll enter it for you.

Hi Nikki, wow the old Kenwood Mix Master brings back wonderful memories of my grandmother, she would always bake up a sweet store for Christmas to bring to us or whilst we were visiting her, and I remember the huge mix master had it’s place on her kitchen bench and infact she lived in a little unit so it took up most of the bench u had to sit the toaster on a board on the stove because there was no way she was moving the Kenwood it was her pride n joy, she even knitted it a beautiful (well when I was a kid I thought it was beautiful) doll cosy to keep the dust off. I have a special recipe that I fell in love with the first time I had it I will have to try and hunt it down at my parents’s place as I would love to share it and I am sure my grandmother would be proud if I past it on. Hopefully I can hunt it down before closing date of the competition otherwise if it is too late and I do find it I will share it anyway. Thanks Nikki . Nite.

G’day and big thanks for this GREAT Giveaway,
I made my Mum’s Special Spice Cake (submitted) that was handed down for four generations shortly before mum past away and was “the first time” she said (when she heard I made it and photographed it too!) I had “MADE HER DAY!”
So now, I share our family tradition with friends annually too! :)
Thank you for allowing me to share such a wonderful memory!
And I DO think this is an unusual, U-N-I-Q-U-E recipe! :)

  • Donna Battams

Memories are often wrapped around food and when I became vegan all the memories kicked in of childhood treats that I thought I would miss out on. Boy was I wrong – my food memories internal database is ever growing and I hope you like the one I have submitted.

What are great competition. Fingers crossed. My husband is a wonderful cook and his grandmother taught him very well. His best work is when he doesn’t follow a recipe and just uses what is in the pantry, which I certainly can’t do. She would be very proud of him I’m sure if she was still here today.

I’m the baker of my family :)
Even when i was younger Mum would buy the cheap Coles brand cake mix and i’d make sure to save a couple of eggs so i could make it haha
Now i LOVE experimenting I make yummy creams and frostings
My hubby frowns at the money i spend on my experiments *even more so when they go wrong= wasted money* BUT when they turn out great he forgets the $$ =)

    MY VERY BERRY PAVALOVA
I adore any Pavlova cake it is light a fluffy cloud of happiness and i always try to comfort myself with the fact that it is a healthy cake with lots of protein vitamins and antioxidants ;-)

    A Very Berry Pavlova

    Preparation Time
    15 – 90 minutes

    Ingredients (serves 8)
    6 eggwhites
    1 1/2 cups (315g) caster sugar
    2 teaspoons white vinegar
    1 tablespoon cornflour
    300ml thickened cream
    Mixed berries, to serve
    Icing sugar mixture, to dust

    Method
Preheat oven to 120°C. Trace a 20cm circle onto a piece of baking paper. Line an oven tray with the baking paper.

Use an electric mixer to whisk the eggwhites in a clean, dry bowl until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating well until thick and glossy, and the sugar is dissolved.

Add the vinegar and cornflour and fold with a large metal spoon until just combined. Spoon the mixture onto the prepared tray. Using the traced circle as a guide, use a spatula or pallet knife to shape into a 20cm disc. Bake for 11?2 hours or until dry to the touch. Turn off oven and leave, with the door ajar, to cool completely.

Use an electric mixer to whisk cream in a bowl until soft peaks form. Transfer pavlova to a serving plate. Top with cream, berries and icing sugar.

  • Jaejaejae

Thanks for a wonderful opportunity to dream of a KitchenAid Stand Mixer in my home! I have memories of my mum baking chocolate cake in a cake tin lined with peppermint geranium leaves (the smell of the cake baking was very memorable!). The peppermint geranium leaves infused a delicate peppermint flavour throughout the cake (my mum was ahead of her time and used lots of natural products that she grew herself – mostly out of necessity!) Unfortunately for us children, the cakes would almost always be given away to neighbours who were sick or experiencing some difficulty. While we didn’t get to eat many of her baked goods, my mum did teach me the important lesson of giving, and that when you do give, you give of your best.

  • Tas

What a tough decision to decide on a colour. Hope that is the challenge that I have to face.

    Thanks for a fantastic giveaway.
