Home : Eleven Great Pallet Furniture Ideas

Have you picked up on this pallet furniture trend yet? It’s not just the GFC that’s driving people to spend less on pieces for their home, it’s also social responsibility and an urge to make that’s driving clever types to rethink those roadside pallets and nifty them up into something great.

Pallets are being re-imagined into sofas, beds, tables and shelves.  They’re being sanded and nailed within an inch of their lives, coaxed into vertical gardens, pot racks, book cases and bed heads.

We are totally loving this trend, and of course we are always ready to encourage niftiness.  We are pretty keen on the whole recycle/rethink ethos too.  The sum of those parts is this great gallery of pallet furniture awesomeness. Get inspired! Ponder the pallet. Rethink, remake, redo. Go you! Woo hoo!

(If you are making a sofa, make sure it’s nice and comfy, okay? No one wants an uncomfy couch, even if it IS recycled!)

    Virtually every piece of furniture in my parents home when we were growing up was fashioned from the waste timber from pallets and packing cases by our Dad. Our beds, desks, wardrobes, the kitchen cupboards, you name it. As was the fashion at the time, there was often a laminex panel involved. All of the built-ins and many of these pieces have survived too-my Mum’s sewing table is now my daughter’s desk, my chest of draws was perfect in my daughter’s nursery, and with a coat of paint and some beautiful new handles now looks fab in my great-niece’s nursery.

      Wow. I think that’s pretty great. I bet it changed your view of ‘stuff’ when you were growing up too. I think people who grow up in DIY households are naturally very adaptable and logical! Thanks for telling us about your Rad Dad!

        Thanks Pip, at nearly 89 he is still a Rad Dad! Not as much furniture making these days but still very productive in the garden. I must admit it took a bit of growing up on my part to value the home made stuff. Now I think that ‘knack’ for making something out of nothing was one of the best things our parents taught us.

    my entire kitchen bench is made of pallets and packing boxes from the mining industry… so is my kitchen wall… they have exceptionally large pallets and containers and the timber has come all the way from brazil! REUSE - RECYCLE!!! and very much RE-LOVED!

    I’ve got all my pallets and I’m ready to go. What do you think. Is the best way to paint them? There’s so many angles and sides seems it would take forever with a brush or spray paint. Thanks!
