I’m really loving that trends from the seventies are creeping back into our homes in modern ways.  For me, as a child of the seventies, there’s something comforting in this new appreciation of things like pine tables or pallet furniture or succulent gardens. They remind me of being a little Muppet and snacking on butterfly cakes, wearing long dresses and scuffed clogs and generally ABBA-ing about the place. (Did you ever ABBA about?)

Terrariums are one of these resurging things that I speak of.  Sort of like a damp, leafy, mossy doll house, you can plonk bits and pieces into any lovely container or glass vessel and make your own unique mini-garden. Maybe you are very chic and want to make your terrarium cool and minimalist? Maybe you are a bit of a kitschy type and you really NEED to put little dwarves and lambs in yours? Whatever your terrarium style, here are eleven cute ways to garden in jar (or bowl or glass or cup!)  Which are your faves?

Do you want to terrarium, too?

I seriously cannot believe you posted this! Only yesterday I purchased a glass fish bowl to make a terrarium and had to explain to my 16 yr old what one was. I’m yet to make it and fear she thinks her Mum has lost her mind. Thank you sooo much x

These are gorgeous. I’ve been itching to make a terrarium with my little one for some time but didn’t know just how we would decorate it. You’ve given me loads of inspiration now. I especially love the Easter themed one – I think we may do something similar but with other characters.

I remember making one of these for my mum for mothers day when I was in 3rd grade at Primary school. I remember being so proud of my masterpiece.

I’m all for dwarves and lambs. The scale appropriate figurines make it look like a miniature world. The finer the detail, the more fascinating it is to look at. I’ve found many vintage terrarium books from the 70′s and 80′s at markets and second hand book shops that give great instructions on what types of plants are best suited to planting in a terrarium.

    Great post!

Oh I have never seen a book about terrariums. Now I want one. I want to see how they did it back in the day, when the terrarium was KING! x
