Blog School: Keith & The Power Of One

I’ve been doing lots of thinking about blogging lately. I’ve been trying to work out what blogging is in 2013, where it’s going, who it’s for, why it is. That kinda thing.

I’ve seen some big changes in the blogging world, since I started out. Things are slicker, more professional, less bumbling.  There are lots more people blogging as part of their daily life, and there are lots of bloggers doing amazing things. We’re all endeavouring to use our voices to say things that are meaningful, interesting, useful, funny, honest or inspiring. This is a good thing, for the most part.

But. It’s super noisy. There’s a LOT of chatter. Lots being said. Hundreds, thousands, millions of stories (or sometimes just posts or plugs) all vying for attention.  A ton of people pushing out ideas, thoughts, creations, products and inspirations into the world. Each person sparklier than the next. It’s totally overwhelming at times. It overwhelms me, trying to work out what to read, who to follow, what’s important to me, what’s real, what’s not, how to listen, how to be heard, what to say.  Do you ever feel like that too?

My friend and I chat about this a lot. We talk about the importance of quality posts, sincerity and heart in blogging. We talk about how hard it is for the good stuff/great bloggers to cut through. During one of these chats she pointed me to Keith Urban. Yep. I know. How can Keith be important to blogging? Well… The answer is that he really can be. He can be a bit of a life guru when he tries.

What Keith said was this:

“This circus…this white noise…pfffttt…circus(y) stuff.  It starts with someone having something to say.  Something they’ve got to get out and articulate.  And in the midst of it, it connects with so many other people and lets them know they’re not alone”.

Something. To. Say. That’s it, in a nutshell. Thanks Keith. Yep.

Yes, Keith was talking about singing… but blogging is a bit like singing, just without the music, right?  And for me, blogging truly is about saying something. It’s not just about keeping to a posting schedule, plugging stuff, gathering clicks and Photoshopping the bejeezus out of cute image collages. Blogging is about having something to say, saying that something in a personal, sincere, true-to-you way and feeling like you’ve meant what you said.

Blogging, for me, is about sending a sincere message, a message so clear and simple and you that it doesn’t matter what kind of response you seem to get from your stats or social media streams.  It doesn’t matter because what you’ve expressed is  100% authentic and human and you.

What do you have to say?

Now that we’ve talked about you, let’s talk about me.  Here’s how I’m going to distill Keith’s circus message and use it on my blog:

I’m going to think about blogging for connection, rather than clicks.
I’m going to think about saying something, or at the very least being me.
And, even more crazily, I’m going to write for JUST ONE PERSON (controversially bucking Keith’s ‘so many other people’ target).

Rather than nervously imagining a whole bunch of people reading my blog, I am going to narrow things down to ONE.  I think that the intimacy and sincerity of writing for just one person will work a treat, and the rest will take care of itself.

I kind of know who my one person is. I don’t know their name or what they look like, but here is what I do know:  It’s a person who is waiting for that thing I am writing and doesn’t even know it. It’s a person who will read what I’ve written and feel a little spark, a little light turning on. Maybe that light will be dim to start with sneaking up on my reader until it’s clear as day.  Or maybe it will be bright, like a flood light being flipped on. The fact remains that there will be a light and it will shift something  a titch in their life and make it work  a little better.

I’m not going in for the circus idea. I’m not coveting the sparkles. I’m definitely not going to worry about making lots of noise. I’m going to focus on making just enough noise, the right kind of noise, for the person I am writing to. Maybe that person is you.

(It’s okay if it isn’t. Maybe Keith is reading…)

x Pip

What do you think? Does it ever feel like a circus? How do you feel about Keith?!

Well said Pip! Blogging is exactly this for me: expression, communication and thought mongering. I hope that I demonstrate heart and sincerity in what I post, because that’s my intention and it’s what I like reading from other bloggers.

I’ve been thinking about it a lot too.
i have been away on holidays and have had a break from blogging.
in any case i really don’t blog more than once a week as my style of blogging is VERY time heavy- cooking, photographing and writing recipes.
i have always believed in the idea about what is NOT written as being important. the importance of the words that are missed out in order to get the reader thinking.
when i look around at all the blogs i am positively dizzy with how many there are & how on earth i could ever read them all. even some of the ones i love- i just don’t get time!
i have a few (very few) faves and i go back to them time & time again.it is because they all have one thing in common in amongst their BIG differences. they all say something that speaks to ME.
    something that i value.
it’s true. that is what matters.

It only has to be a circus if you let it be. Be the person you are, blog the person you are and you’ll attract the readers you want hanging out in your space because you’re being you. And you really are awesome ;)

Thanks Pip; for articulating some of my own grapplings with thoughts about the whys of blogging. Recently I stopped personal blogging, or paused really, to have a think. Just one day I felt really exposed, I mean when you are on the internet you are really putting it our there in a very permanent way, even though thoughts and feelings are just transient most of the time….I’m still thinking about it…but thanks for your thoughts (and Keith’s).

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Pip @ JustB

I’d love to hear more. I totally identify with all that you’ve said, Amy. It’s a complex issue, and there’s a lot to digest, isn’t there? x

  • Pippa

I think I like Keith, he’s got life skills and a presence about him!
Through blogging I have developed some writing skills but I think I do pictures better…they make the connection for me!

I love this, chatting about blogging…I love learning new things, thanks Ladies x

Its the commercialsiation and formula-risation has taken a lot of the joy out of blogs for me. I don’t want to be told what to do or what to buy or how to live by bloggers. I just want, as you so perfectly say here, to hear what someone has to say, something authentic. It could be crazy, factual, interesting, helpful, funny, silly, swear-y, challenging, beautiful, ridiculous or sad – as long as its real. Thats what I love about blogs, the intimacy and connection to someone else’s life (even if sometimes its alittle bit tidied and jollied up for the interwebs, as us bloggers are wnat to do.)

It seems to me that Blogs have become a commercial popularity contest. Bloggers are beign targetted by businesses and politticians to influence their readers. I don’t like that. That makes me feel a bit sad and a bit disconnected.

I write my blog for one person. I always have. My life, head and heart gets messy and that’s only ever going to be of interest to a few, mayeb only really to me? Thats why I have only 58 followers, but they are 58 top quality, hard won, beautiful followers.
Kirsty and Keith are both very wise and very attractive.

    • g

So many typos .. why do I never see them until after I have pressed ‘post’

    • http://www.kootoyoo.com/ kootoyoo

Keith is very attractive. I have to say I had never thought of him as wise (or thought much about him really) until ‘the voice’. I’m now a HUGE fan. When I watched him deliver this little monologue, I truly had an eyes wide moment. My heart nearly burst!

You, G are one of the wisest! I love your something to say posts. x

      • G

Me too. He has beautiful eyes and a beautiful soul. What a sweet gentle man! I am a fan of his but I am not sure I can ever learn to love the country music.

Thanks Kirst. I love that you read my posts. You are very kind. I will not gush as to how much I love your posts, pics and your ‘yes’ view of life, except to say that I really do love it all.

        • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Pip @ JustB

          Um…. Chopped liver….. *titter*

          • G

You are not too foul yourself, Pip!

It was your awesome post that provoked my people-beginning-with-K lovefest.

Honestly, this piece is thought-provoking and captures a lot of what has been on my mind about web writing, Pip. It’s great stuff.

          • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Pip @ JustB

Aw! I was only joking… But I am not joking about being very glad that you read my thing. And being very glad that Kirsty and her Keith loving inspired the whole thing! :) x

  • Jenn :: The Blissful Brush

Thanks Pip for a great post …. I really am a very inconsistent blogger, but would like to be a more consistent one, but I am always struggling with what to write and then spend too much time trying to analyse if anyone would ever be interested in what I have just written, rather than just getting on with it. So I am now going to take your approach and get over myself and my fear and write for my one person too. x

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Pip @ JustB

I think it just might work..! :) x

  • http://www.facebook.com/babushkamama Janina Lear

Great post Pip, it sure is getting overwhelming out there in blog world so it is hard to know what to read. I, like you, seem to identify with things that are real, raw, true and authentic.

    • http://www.justbaustralia.com.au/ Pip @ JustB

I like your style, Janina. Thanks so much for reading my piece. x

  • Kazz

Loved reading this Pip, it’s such a fab message. I too put my blinkers on and just go forth. Nikki’s comment sums it up for me…Be the person you are, blog the person you are and you’ll attract the readers you want. My ‘right kind of noise’ is to hopefully inspire my kind of reader- visually (i am not a writer) to just have a go and be themselves.

  • Reannon Hope

I’m your person Pip. I love your words, the way you string them together, the way you make me think & your generosity of spirit. You were the first blog I read & I still read every single day. I think you already have it down pat!

I’m a blog lover & I read lots of different ones for lots of different reasons but I have noticed over the last few months or so a bit of a shift. Some blogs are moving past being a place to share & connect , they are becoming people’s business, their livelihood & obviously the “clicks”& the “stats” matter. Some are doing it really well, some not so much. In changing the focus some blogs are just are not keeping my interest & that is OK I do not mind if people want to make money, good for them, go for it! So then I go searching for a new place to hang out, a place where I can learn something new, see a life that is different to mine, that talks about things that are relevant & interesting to me, that inspires me. I guess that is one of the great things about there being lots of people blogging- you can always find something that you like :)

I don’t blog but I am a blog fan. I have my favourites that I like to check in with every day and then a huge selection of those that meet different needs, some fun and frivolous others more thought provoking and inspiring. As an avid reader you can feel the personality of bloggers that love what they do via their words or pictures. Pip, you and the Just B team are bloggers that hit the mark with lots of amazing things that continue to inspire me and push me out of my comfort zone. And as one blogger says “all the action happens in the comments section” and that’s what makes blogs so interesting.

  • Kate @ foxslane

To be honest I think I don’t really think about it enough. I like it and so I do it. I don’t know anything about SEO or keywords or analytics. I read blogs that are honest and real and mean something to me. I think I only ever blog to one person too, if I really thought about the bigger picture I might never blog again.

    • kate @ foxslane

oops, forgot to talk about the heart thing. ABSOLUTELY!! xx

Pip, you’re so on the money. Writing for one makes all those ‘ones’ that read your blog feel that lovely Pippy connection. I haven’t been able to get my head around writing my poor neglected blog, because I feel that the ‘thing I have to say’ is so personal…. but I like your voice and your spirit, and that makes me think about ways I can put my story out while protecting the innocent bystanders in my life…. thanks Pip, keep on keeping on.

  • Hellkat Designs

I loved this post Pip. I’ve been thinking about blogging a lot recently too. I see my own blog as a documentation of my creativity and thoughts, and how they all develop over time. Sincerity is important I think, I try to write how I like to read. And how gosh-darn dreamy is Keith in that photo? Goodness!

  • AJ

I’ve been inspired by your blog school, Pip, to create my blog (pastposes.wordpress.com) and share images of the models wearing the finished garments from 20th century pattern books. I wanted a blog to share these images so it wasn’t just me enjoying my pattern book collection. No-one may ever look at ‘Past Poses’ but me of course, and so my sharing goal might not be fulfilled, but that’s OK. My wish to share is very sincere and the blog is the forum for sharing – I’m happy I’ve given it a go and I’m happy someone else might enjoy the fabulous pattern book pics – just one person or many!

Thanks so much, Pip, for sharing your thoughts on blogs and blogging, and lots of other wonderful things.

    I definitely agree Pip.

I struggle everyday trying to figure out what’s ‘white noise’ and what’s worthwhile tapping into.

I’m also starting to stretch my legs and step into my own blog and it seems like such a fine line between corporate process and jargon and genuine content.

    Great reminder!!

  • http://twitter.com/HomeleaLass Lynda Rennick

That’s some serious food for thought Pip and you’ve made me think about why I want to blog. It’s not like I’ve got well developed blog writing skills, in fact I’m more practiced in writing technical documents and quick emails than for entertainment or enlightenment. But deep down inside me I want to blog. I want to share with someone what I’ve learnt (and am learning) on my life’s journey, so that perhaps their journey may be a little easier.

Oh, and I love Keith. I did go through a stage where I was sure he was signing to me.

I started to write my blog in the hopes that one day it would reach ‘me’. Just one Mum who was going through what I went through when my son was first diagnosed, and hopefully my blog would help her to understand that she’s not the only one, and that there is someone else who knows exactly what she is going through. Thank you, Pip. I’m now confident that I am writing exactly the way I should be.
